Measure the destination, not the frame
Measure vertically from the floor to the top of the mattress or cushion in its normal position. Use the same units when comparing product dimensions.
- Record mattress-top height.
- Request the selected product’s top height.
- Subtract product height from destination height to see the remaining transition.
A stair ending below the mattress leaves another transition. There is no universal acceptable gap for every dog.
Lay out the full footprint
Mark the confirmed floor length and width with removable tape. Open the nearest drawer and door, and leave space to approach from the bottom.

Going taller can cost floor space. More steps alone does not establish a smaller individual rise.

- Check whether rounded edges reduce the usable tread.

If neither the footprint nor the final transition works, reconsider the position or structure instead of choosing by step count.
